Understanding India Post Tracking Status Updates

Most Speed Post shipments move normally even when tracking shows no update. Here is what each common status means and what you should do.

Item Booked

You will see this immediately after booking. The consignment number is created and the parcel is accepted at the post office. This is the starting point of your tracking journey.

Dispatched from Booking Office

The parcel has left the booking post office and is on its way to the nearest mail sorting hub. No scan may appear for several hours.

In Transit

The parcel is travelling between cities. Updates appear only when it is physically scanned at a sorting center. A gap of 24–48 hours is completely normal and does not mean the parcel is lost.

No Update for 1–2 Days?

This is normal during road transport between sorting centers, especially for long-distance deliveries. Check again the next morning — new scans usually happen overnight.

Arrived at Delivery Office

The parcel has reached the post office closest to the delivery address. Delivery will usually happen within the next 1–2 working days.

Out for Delivery

The postman has picked up the parcel for delivery. It should arrive the same day before 5 PM. Keep your phone accessible in case the postman needs directions.

Delivered

The parcel has been delivered. If you did not personally receive it, check with family members, neighbours, building security, or the building gate.

Delivery Attempted / Undelivered

The postman could not complete delivery — the address may have been locked or unclear. The parcel returns to the post office. You can collect it with ID proof within a few days.

Common India Post Tracking Problems & Solutions

Most delays and issues are temporary. Here are the most common tracking problems users face and exactly what you should do.

📍Tracking Not Updating

The tracking status may not change for 1–2 days after booking or dispatch. This is normal when the parcel is travelling by road between sorting centers and has not yet been scanned at the next checkpoint.

What to do:

  • Wait 24–48 hours — updates appear after the next scan
  • Check again in the morning when overnight scans are processed
  • Verify the tracking number carefully — no spaces or typos
  • Try tracking on the official India Post website to cross-check

Parcel Delayed Beyond Expected Time

Delivery can take longer than usual during public holidays, exam seasons, monsoon disruptions, or high-volume periods like Diwali. Long-distance and rural deliveries are especially affected.

What to do:

  • Allow 1–2 extra days for long-distance deliveries
  • Check for recent public holidays on your delivery route
  • Wait until tracking shows "Arrived at Delivery Office"
  • If delayed beyond 7 days, call 1800-266-6868 (toll-free)

🚫Delivery Attempt Failed / Undelivered

If the postman could not find the address or no one was home, the parcel is returned to the post office. You will usually see "Delivery Attempted" or "Addressee Not Available" in tracking.

What to do:

  • Check your mailbox for a delivery slip from the postman
  • Visit the nearest delivery post office with your ID proof
  • You typically have 7 days to collect before it is returned
  • Keep your phone reachable — postmen sometimes call ahead

📦Marked Delivered But Not Received

In rare cases the tracking shows Delivered but you have not received the parcel. This happens when it was handed to a family member, neighbour, or building security guard without your knowledge.

What to do:

  • Ask all family members and building security immediately
  • Check with neighbours, especially ground floor or reception
  • Visit the delivery post office with your tracking number
  • Raise a complaint at the post office if not resolved in 24 hours

🔁Parcel Returned to Sender

Parcels are returned if multiple delivery attempts fail, the address is incorrect or incomplete, or the recipient refuses to accept the item. You will see "RTS" or "Return to Sender" in the tracking history.

What to do:

  • Ask the sender to confirm what address was used
  • If address was wrong, request the sender to resend correctly
  • Ensure someone is available at the delivery address next time
  • For high-value items, opt for Registered Post with acknowledgement

📞When to Contact India Post Directly

If tracking shows no movement for more than 5 days, or you cannot resolve a delivery dispute, contact India Post directly through official channels.

What to do:

  • Helpline: 1800-266-6868 (toll-free, Mon–Sat 8AM–8PM)
  • Online complaint: crmportal.indiapost.gov.in
  • Visit your nearest post office with the consignment number
  • Keep the booking receipt — it has the sender's details

About India Post & This Tracking Tool

India Post is India's government-run postal service, operating under the Department of Posts since 1854. With over 1.55 lakh post offices — the largest postal network in the world — it connects every corner of the country, from metro cities to the most remote villages.

Speed Post, launched in 1986, is India Post's express delivery service. It uses a combination of air, rail, and road transport to ensure fast, trackable delivery. Millions of Indians rely on it daily for sending documents, certificates, parcels, and important government correspondence.

When you book any Speed Post or Registered Post item, you receive a 13-character consignment number on your receipt. This is your tracking key. SpeedPostLive.com is an independent informational website that makes it easy to look up that status in plain language — no jargon, no confusion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the most common questions about India Post tracking, Speed Post delivery, delays, complaints, and shipment issues.

Enter your 13-digit consignment number (for example, EM123456789IN) in the tracking box at the top of this page and click Track Now. You will immediately see the full tracking history, including booking confirmation, dispatch, transit updates, arrival at delivery office, and final delivery status.

The first two letters indicate the mail type. EM = Speed Post (domestic express), EE = EMS (international express), RR = Registered Letter, RP = Registered Packet, CP = Registered Parcel, CX = Commercial Sample, VP = Value Payable Post. All tracking numbers from India end with IN.

Tracking updates appear only when the parcel is physically scanned at a sorting or delivery center. During road transport between cities, there may be no new updates for 24 to 48 hours. This is completely normal. Check again the next morning — overnight sorting usually generates new scans.

Speed Post delivery takes 1 day for same-city shipments, 1–2 days for metro-to-metro, 2–4 days for city to district, 3–5 days for remote areas, and 4–7 days for rural locations. International EMS takes 5–10 business days depending on the destination country. See our detailed delivery time guide for state-wise estimates.

If tracking has not moved for 2–3 days, wait another 24 hours — long-distance parcels have natural gaps between scans. If there is no movement for more than 5 days, call India Post helpline 1800-266-6868 (toll-free, Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 8 PM) or visit your nearest post office with the consignment number.

First check with all family members and building security. In many cases the parcel is handed to a family member or neighbour. If still not found, visit the local delivery post office within 3 days with your consignment number and a photo ID. They can check the physical delivery record which includes the signature of the recipient.

Out for Delivery means the parcel has arrived at your local delivery post office and the postman has picked it up for today's delivery round. The parcel should reach you the same day, usually before 5 PM. Keep your phone accessible in case the postman needs to confirm your address.

You can file a complaint through the India Post CRM portal at crmportal.indiapost.gov.in or call the toll-free helpline 1800-266-6868 (Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 8 PM). Keep your original booking receipt and consignment number ready. Complaints can also be filed in person at any post office.

Speed Post deliveries generally occur on working days — Monday to Saturday. Some major metro cities offer limited Sunday delivery, but this varies by location. National public holidays like Republic Day, Independence Day, and Gandhi Jayanti will delay dispatch and delivery by 1–2 days.

No. A consignment number is mandatory to fetch tracking data. If you have lost it, contact the sender and ask them to share it from their booking receipt. Alternatively, visit the post office where the item was booked — they can retrieve the number using the date of booking and the sender's name.

India Post's toll-free helpline number is 1800-266-6868. It is available Monday to Saturday from 8 AM to 8 PM. You can also submit complaints online at indiapost.gov.in or visit any post office in person for assistance with tracking, delivery, or complaints.
